“Guys and Dolls”

Brandon, MS - “Guys and Dolls is set in Damon Runyon’s mythical New York City, this oddball romantic comedy – considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy – soars with the spirit of Broadway as it introduces us to a cast of vivid characters who have become legends in the canon: Sarah Brown, the upright but uptight “mission doll,” out to reform the evildoers of Time Square; Sky Masterson, the slick, high-rolling gambler who woos her on a bet and ends up falling in love; Adelaide, the chronically ill nightclub performer whose condition is brought on by the fact she’s been engaged to the same man for 14 years; and Nathan Detroit, her devoted fiancé, desperate as always to find a spot for his infamous floating crap game. Everything works out in the end, thanks to the machinations of Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling‘s hilarious, fast-paced book and Frank Loesser‘s bright, brassy, immortal score, which takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana, Cuba, and even into the sewers of New York City. Funny and romantic, GUYS AND DOLLS is ideal for audiences and performers of any age.

Black Rose Theatre will be holding auditions for Guys and Dolls Sunday Sept 11 @2:00pm, Saturday Sept 17 @ 10:00 am and 2:00 pm at 103 Black Street, Brandon Ms

No preparations are needed to audition. Ages 15 and up.

We need actors, singers, dancers -anyone who might want to try their hand at any/all of those!

Desperate to find money to pay for his floating crap game, Nathan Detroit bets Sky Masterson a thousand dollars that Sky will not be able to take a local Salvation Army girl, Sarah Brown, to Cuba. While Sky tries to convince Sarah to join him, Nathan battles with his fiancé of fourteen years, Adelaide. Fun ensues with assorted gamblers and church members.

Suppose you're an attractive high school girl and you're not only a member of a large and unique family but your father is, in fact, one of the great pioneers of industrial efficiency. Then suppose he decides, for no apparent reason, to apply his unorthodox methods to you and to the rest of your big family. The results are terribly embarrassing, funny and—it must be admitted—extremely effective! To Anne, however, the chief effec...t seems to be that of making them seem ridiculous to everyone else at school—especially to the boys! Dad pushes ahead with better organization for his large and delightful family. He puts up a chart for the young people to initial after completing each household task, uses a rung as an imaginary bathtub to demonstrate how to take a really efficient bath and appoints a utilities officer to levy fines on wasters of electricity. While the situations are often uproarious, there's a serious reason. Dad has a heart condition which he's keeping secret. The children don't understand them. Anne, the oldest, rebels. Both Dad and she are miserable at the lack of understanding between them. Then in a deft and moving scene, Dad becomes aware of how much Anne has grown up.

Synopsis: A church Christmas program spins hilariously out of control in this Southern farce about squabbling sisters, family secrets, a surly Santa, a vengeful sheep and a reluctant Elvis impersonator. It's Christmas-time in the small town of Fayro , Texas , and the Futrelle Sisters—Frankie, Twink and Honey Raye—are not exactly in a festive mood. A cranky Frankie is weeks overdue with her second set of twins. Twink, recently jilted and bitter about it, is in jail for inadvertently burning down half the town. And hot-flash-suffering Honey Raye is desperately trying to keep the Tabernacle of the Lamb's Christmas Program from spiraling into chaos. But things are not looking too promising: Miss Geneva, the ousted director of the previous twenty-seven productions, is ruthless in her attempts to take over the show. The celebrity guest Santa Claus—played by Frankie's long-suffering husband, Dub—is passing a kidney stone. One of the shepherds refuses to watch over his flock by night without pulling his little red wagon behind him. And the entire cast is dropping like flies due to food poisoning from the Band Boosters' Pancake Supper. And when Frankie lets slip a family secret that has been carefully guarded for decades, all hope for a successful Christmas program seems lost, even with an Elvis impersonator at the manger. But in true Futrelle fashion, the feuding sisters find a way to pull together in order to present a Christmas program the citizens of Fayro will never forget. Their hilarious holiday journey through a misadventure-filled Christmas Eve is guaranteed to bring joy to your world!

The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable. Joseph, his father's favorite son, is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. He is purchased by Potiphar where thwarting advances from Potiphar's wife lands him in jail. When news of Joseph's gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh, Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. Eventually his brothers, having suffered greatly, unknowingly find themselves groveling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognize. After testing their integrity, Joseph reveals himself leading to a heartfelt reconciliation of the sons of Israel. Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, including french ballads, Elvis inspired rock 'n' roll, western, 1920s Charleston, Caribbean and disco, this Old Testament tale emerges both timely and timeless.

This powerful play explores the mind and experience of a high school girl who inadvertently gets into drugs. The lesson in this play is not the result of a lecture or Public service announcement but, rather, a sharply visualized tragedy that happens to a member of the peer group. "Please God let me be accepted," Alice wrote in her diary. Alice is a fairly typical girl from an average family with parents who love her. She wants to make friends, hand out with the popular kids, dance with boys and make good grades. What makes Alice different is that she's tricked into trying drugs and then becomes addicted. She fights against her addiction, but by the time she has learned the answers, it may already be too late.

Come with us back to a time in the 1990’s when life was simpler. The Internet was not common and personal computers were primarily for playing video games. CD’s and DVD’s had not appeared on the scene, at least not in Deerlick a small town in Rankin County, MS. For entertainment one had 3 TV stations and maybe PBS. A few AM and FM radio stations and 33 1/3 LP records. There was an electronic wonder called VHS players but very few could figure out how to set the timers on them. People would sit outside on their wide porches passing time on hot summer days with their friends. Life was quiet, centered around family, friends, church, work, and the local Piggly Wiggly. Nina Dawson, Virginia and Steve Sutton penned this snippet of life for your pleasure.

It's the vibrant 1920s, complete with Ziegfeld girls, raccoon coats, ukuleles, goldfish swallowers and gangsters! Polly Pepper, a young flapper, is about to turn 18 years old and will then inherit an extraordinary diamond necklace. She is planning a wacky birthday party and is inviting all her friends. Buck Wayne, Polly's new boyfriend, wouldn't miss the birthday celebration for anything, even if he has to land his private plane on the lawn of the polo grounds. But watch out, trouble's in the air! Mobsters are planning to grab the necklace and have devised a clever con to crash Polly's party. Thanks to Polly, they're defeated hilariously! Not only does Polly save the necklace, she also saves her aunt from losing money in a confidence scheme and becomes the star of the Ziegfeld Follies... all before she even cuts the cake! Meet terrific characters like Monica Woodsquirrel of Radio Station WWWW atop Hotel Times Square, crime fighter Lieutenant Fluke, Mona of the Crazy Cat Club and "flagpole sitter" Lenny Knickerbocker. The songs are sensational, including "It Has to be Jazz," "Flapper," "Dijja Ever?" and, natch, "Ev'rybody, Charleston." This simple production is filled with lots of small, funny roles. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Auditions

Friday July 9th from 6-8pm
Saturday July 10th from 2-4pm
Callbacks will be held Saturday after 4pm IF NECESSARY.

Rehearsals will begin the first week of August 2010.
The production dates are Sept 23-26 & 30th as well as October 1-3.

Casting is open to teens and adults.

Please bring a prepared song. It should be a story telling song from Broadway or other genre. In addition to vocal skills the director will be looking for your ability to convey the meaning of the song.

Approach your audition this way... A song is a monologue set to music.

There will be a choreographed number taught to gauge dance skills. There is no spoken dialogue in the show but there will be cold readings to help judge your acting and interpretive skills.

There are 13 parts for male actors in this show. An equal number of female actors will be cast.

Character (Vocal) Descriptions

Narrators (various) People not of the time or place of the action. They tell the story through word and song, guiding the audience through (and in some cases participating in) the story of Joseph.

Joseph (Tenor) A young man who is the favorite of his father but the envy of his brothers. He begins the story as a teenager full of wonder and excitement with the world. Through the course of the show he matures into a confident man who sees God’s hand in all that has happened. Joseph early on shows a talent for interpreting dreams and telling the future. This gets him into trouble with his brothers when he predicts his future will include ruling over the other eleven. However, it saves his life when in Egypt he correctly interprets Pharaoh’s dreams. In the end he has risen to a great position of power, but he still forgives his brothers and brings his family to Egypt to partake of the bounty he has accumulated there.

Jacob / Potiphar (Baritone) Jacob is the father of twelve sons, who favors Joseph. At times he may appear unfair and shallow, but he is, more importantly, the prophet who recognizes the future and the calling of Joseph, thus saving the House of Israel. *Potiphar is a powerful and rich Egyptian, Potiphar purchases Joseph and puts him to work in his household, where he soon realizes that Joseph is honest, hard-working. When he grows suspicious of his wife and Joseph, however, he grows angry and has Joseph thrown into prison. *These roles may be cast with one actor or individually.

Mrs. Potiphar (Any) Potiphar's wife who tries unsuccessfully to seduce Joseph. When this fails, she convices her husband that Joseph attacked her resulting in Joseph being thrown in jail.

The Brothers (various) Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Napthali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin are men and teens of various ages. Although they usually act as a group, each has their own different personalities, talents, and flaws. As a group they sell Joseph into slavery, but as individuals they deal with the following years and how they can make amends. They sing and dance their way through many situations and places, and also double as Egyptians in many cases.

Baker (Tenor) A servant of Pharoah in prison with Joseph who interprets his dreams and predicts that he will be put to death.
Butler (Tenor) A servant of Pharaoh in prison with Joseph who interprets his dreams predicting he will be released and taken back into Pharaoh's household.
Pharaoh (Tenor-Baritone) The most powerful man in Egypt (who happens to remind you of a young Elvis). Pharaoh is considered a god on earth and he definately believes it. When Joseph interprets his dreams, he promotes him to one of the highest positions in his government.

Female & Male Chorus (various) These multi-talented people appear in the play as many characters such as wives, Israelites, Ismaelites, guards, prisoners, Egyptians, etc

"A raindrop just splashed on my forehead," Alice wrote in her diary, "and it was like a tear from heaven. Am I really alone? Is it possible that even God is crying for me?" Alice is a fairly typical girl from an average family with parents who love her. What makes Alice different is that she's tricked into trying drugs and then becomes addicted. Those not presenting a monologue will be asked to do a cold reading. A small dance routine will also be taught.

Synopsis:
Hilarity abounds in this portrait of three couples successively occupying a suite at the Plaza. A suburban couple take the suite while their house is being paintedandit turns out to be the one in which they honeymooned 23 (or was it 24?) years before and was yesterday the anniversary, or is it today? This wry tale of marriage in tatters is followed by the exploits of a Hollywood producer who, after three marriages, is looking for fresh fields. He calls a childhood sweetheart, now a suburban housewife, for a little sexual diversion. Over the years she has idolized him from afar and is now more than the match he bargained for. The last couple is a mother and father fighting about the best way to get their daughter out of the bathroom and down to the ballroom where guests await her or as Mother yells, "I want you to come out of that bathroom and get married!"

Buck Wayne, Polly's new boyfriend, wouldn't miss the birthday celebration for anything, even if he has to land his private plane on the lawn of the polo grounds. But watch out, trouble's in the air! Mobsters are planning to grab the necklace and have devised a clever con to crash Polly's party. Thanks to Polly, they're defeated hilariously! Not only does Polly save the necklace, she also saves her aunt from losing money in a confidence scheme and becomes the star of the Ziegfeld Follies... all before she even cuts the cake! Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town's rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, ("I'm not crazy, I've just been in a bad mood for forty years"); an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M'Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a "good ole boy." Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy when, in the second act, the spunky Shelby (who is a diabetic) risks pregnancy and forfeits her life. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strength—and love—which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.

World renowned stage director/choreographer Bill Fabris will hold a workshop at Black Rose Theatre in beautiful downtown Brandon on Saturday, April 10 from 7:30 until 9:30. Workshop is open to all – actors, singers, dancers – cost is $25 – payable upon registration.

Mr. Fabris enjoys a national and international reputation for excellent, innovative and entertaining productions. He is equally at home staging musical theatre or opera. His national credits include working with many theatres and opera groups in many states throughout the country. His New York credits include several operas and since 1987, he has been the director and choreographer for the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players. Internationally, he has directed in Barcelona, Spain; Manchester, England; and a European tour of Jesus Christ, Superstar and Hair. He choreographed the award-winning short film Boot Camp, which has been featured in numerous festivals including Sundance and the Berlin International Film Festival.

From 1998-2006, Mr. Fabris was on the faculty of Westminster Choir College where he co-designed the musical theatre program and directed the Westminster Opera Theater.

The Black Rose Theatre would like to invite you and yours to the 3rd annual BRT Showcase Talent Event to be held on May 1st, 2010. We will begin at 10:00 AM.

This year you have the option to be judged or not. The theatre will furnish keyboard, microphones, tape/cd players, and lighting. Talent must not exceed two minutes. All performers must dress appropriately. Songs with questionable lyrics and dances with questionable gestures will not be allowed.

Group Fees: $5 per performer in group, comments only (non - refundable); $10 per performer in group, judged (non - refundable)

Individual Fees: $10 per performer, comments only (non - refundable); $15 per performer, judged (non - refundable)

There will also be refreshments for sale as well as hand made items and other treasures. This will be on a first come, first served basis, so if you are interested or know of anyone who is, please respond as soon as possible. Forms and money due BEFORE April 5th in order for the performance schedule to be mailed to you.

Cost to attend the talent show will be $5.00 per person. Your hand will be stamped to allow you to come and go throughout the day .

You are welcome to leave after you perform if you need to but are encouraged to stay to hear others.

Black Rose Theatre will be taking the One Act Graceland to the Mississippi Theatre Association competition later this month. To get ready for this we will be presenting the play for free at Black Rose Theatre on Saturday January 9 2010 at 7:30 pm.

Reservations will not be taken for this performance. It will be strictly first come first serve. Please come out and support Black Rose and the talented cast of Graceland.

Synopsis: The place is the front entrance of Graceland, the late Elvis Presley's Memphis mansion, the time, five o'clock in the morning, three days before the estate is to be opened to the public. Two ardent Presley fans, Bev and Rootie, are camped out before the gates, each determined to be the first to enter the sacred precincts. Bev is a bewigged, middle-aged lady with too much make-up and a brassy down-home style; Rootie is young and shy and somewhat intimidated by the raucous Bev. Wary at first, the two soon progress from dispute to shared confidences and a growing compassion that, in the end, moves the essentially warm-hearted Bev to defer the place of honor to her waif-like and touchingly sincere rival.

Brandon, MS – When a houseful of sweet little old ladies discovers that a handsome bachelor lives across the street, they are delighted. When they learn that he is none other than Detective Dennis O’Finn, of Homicide, they are faced with the problem of how to attract his attention. The answer is simplicity itself: a nice, genteel homicide with a cup of tea as the murder weapon. When a brash young woman reporter begins to suspect the truth, she becomes the next target. O’Finn is terribly embarrassed when at last he discovers that he himself is the motive for these madcap goings-on, and, in desperation, manages to solve the case. But the dear old ladies are too fond of him and in the end they turn the tables on him! First a short story in Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, later a success on Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and now a stage veteran of hundreds of performances around the country, Bull in a China Shop continues to enchant audiences everywhere!

Yes, Christmas is just around the corner. TOYS FOR TOTS was a great success last year, so we wanted to try again this year and give you more time to prepare. Black Rose Theatre is teaming up with TOYS FOR TOTS to collect toys for those children that otherwise would not have a Christmas.

“Sleeping Beauty and the Beast”

Brandon, MS - When the evil faerie places Princess Rose under a sleeping curse brave Prince Charmless sets out to find her and break the curse. Along the way he meets Puss n Boots and the Headless Horseman to help him in his quest. He also has to find Prince Frankie (who has been turned into a beast) a love interest of his own before he will allow him access to Rose. This fractured faerie tale provides plenty of fun and laughs.

Show times for Sleeping Beauty and the Beast are September 17-19 and 24- 26 @ 7:30 PM and September 20 and 27 @ 2:00 PM. Seating is limited, so be sure to make reservations in advance by calling 601-825-1293. Ticket prices are $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. We accept cash or check only.

Synopsis:
When a houseful of sweet little old ladies discovers that a handsome bachelor lives across the street, they are delighted. When they learn that he is none other than Detective Dennis O’Finn, of Homicide, they are faced with the problem of how to attract his attention. The answer is simplicity itself: a nice, genteel homicide with a cup of tea as the murder weapon. When a brash young woman reporter begins to suspect the truth, she becomes the next target. O’Finn is terribly embarrassed when at last he discovers that he himself is the motive for these madcap goings-on, and, in desperation, manages to solve the case. But the dear old ladies are too fond of him and in the end they turn the tables on him! First a short story in Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, later a success on Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and now a stage veteran of hundreds of performances around the country, Bull in a China Shop continues to enchant audiences everywhere!

Nearing the second anniversary of Gillian's tragic death, the family gathers back at the beach house where widower David continues to seclude himself. Through the love, support and urging of those around him, he struggles to re-embrace life without Gillian in this charming, inspiring and wonderful family drama that celebrates love, loss and life.

"To Gillian..." is a celebration of life - and the fact that, no matter what, life must go on....even when we think it can't.

Junior Company (rising 3rd – 6th graders): Auditions will begin @ 6:00 p.m. Please be prepared to wait. You are encouraged to prepare a 1 minute song and/or monologue. *A song will be taught to those who do not prepare an audition solo. Those not presenting a monologue will be asked to do a cold reading.
Senior Company: (rising 7th – 12th graders) Auditions will begin @ 7:30 p.m. Please be prepared to wait. Present a one minute song and a one minute monologue.
Additional Info: Mandatory rehearsals will be held on alternating Monday evenings. Mandatory fees include: $60.00 tuition per month from Aug-May, camp, and costume fees. Additional expenses such as local competitions and other fees may apply. Fundraising is available.

The Black Rose Theatre would like to invite you and yours to the second annual BRT Showcase Talent Event to be held on May 9th, 2009. We will begin at 2:00 PM. As soon as forms are returned, I will send you a performance schedule and other information.

There will be no winners selected as this is just a chance to perform on stage for a supportive audience. The theatre will furnish sound equipment, lights, and simple props (chairs, stools, etc.). There will also be refreshments for sale as well as hand made items and other treasures. This will be on a first come, first served basis, so if you are interested or know of anyone who is, please respond as soon as possible. Forms are due ASAP.

The entry fee is $10.00 per person (additional performance will be $5.00.)

To attend the talent show will be $5.00 per person. Your hand will be stamped to allow you to come and go.This will be a non-threatening environment and will be a lot of fun.

Also, you are welcome to leave after you perform if you need to but are also encouraged to stay to hear others.

Black Rose Theatre Presents OLIVER!

“Oliver”, the musical version of the Charles Dickens’ classic “Oliver Twist”, allows us a somewhat light-hearted look back into life in old London . The music from this show gives a much brighter outlook on what was probably a dreary time in the lives of the people who lived it. The orphan, Oliver Twist, has the audacity to ask the warden of the workhouse for more gruel, and is sold to an undertaker because of his supposed “greed”. Not treated very kindly by the undertaker and his family, Oliver runs off to London to seek his fortune. There, he runs into the Artful Dodger who introduces him to Mr. Fagin – “a kindly old gentleman who will give you lodgings for nothing.” As it turns out, “Mr.” Fagin is the leader of a pack of pick pockets. For many years he has trained young orphaned children to slip in and out and steal all sorts of items – pocket handkerchiefs, pocket watches, wallets – any small item that can easily be concealed. When Oliver goes “out on the job” with Dodger and Charlie, he gets “nabbed” when the others run away after picking a pocket. When Fagin finds out that Oliver was taken to court, he sends a former pupil to get him back. In the meantime, Oliver was released by the judge and taken home with the gentleman who had his pocket picked. Oliver is taken back to Fagin’s and eventually is kidnapped by the very dangerous Bill Sikes – another former pupil of Fagin’s. Much unlike real-life drama, this musical allows us to have a “happy ending” and we can all leave with a spring in our step while humming one of the wonderfully familiar tunes from the show.

Show times for Oliver are April 23-25 and 30- May 2 2009 @7:30 PM and April 26 and May 3 2009 @ 2:00 PM.

The entry fee is $10.00 per person (additional performance will be $5.00.) To attend the talent show will be $5.00 per person. Your hand will be stamped to allow you to come and go.

This will be a non-threatening environment and will be a lot of fun. Also, you are welcome to leave after you perform if you need to but are also encouraged to stay to hear others.

Brandon, MS - The Futrelle Sisters, Frankie, Honey Raye and Twink, are throwing a wedding.. Frankie has almost made herself sick with elaborate preparations for her daughter Tina Jo's antebellum-inspired wedding, and the rumor mill in their small town of Fayro, Texas, is working overtime. No surprise there, the Futrelle Sisters have never been strangers to gossip. But Twink's desperate attempts to get her boyfriend of fifteen-and-one-half years down the aisle, Frankie's ongoing conversations with their dead mother, and Honey Raye's tendency to race to the altar at every opportunity have kept tongues wagging for years. In spite of her own marital problems, Frankie has held steadfastly to the hope that she can pull off one "final Futrelle occasion" with elegance and style with the help of the cantankerous wedding coordinator, Miss Geneva, who runs the local floral shop/bus depot. But on the day of the nuptials, Frankie's hope begins to dim when she discovers Twink's alternative solution to an expensive catered wedding dinner. When the prodigal Honey Raye arrives at the church in skintight gold lamé, consumed by hot flashes and a steely determination to right old family wrongs, Frankie's hope is shaken. It is lost completely when word reaches the church that Tina Jo and her fiancé have fled Fayro and eloped.. The sisters ultimately pull together to find ways to keep the unsuspecting guests in the pews while a highway patrolman races off to track down the runaway bride and groom. As a last resort, and to the delight of the citizenry of Fayro, Texas, The Sermonettes reunite and sing again.

The curtain opens on the sinister interior of the workhouse with a bare dining table, center stage, where the boys will sit. These pale-faced wretches can be seen peering through the bars of a door at the back. Looming above two curving stairways glows the legend "God Is Love" in rough letters. The door is opened and the boys file to the table and sing Food, Glorious Food. At the end of the song, the Widow Corney, who runs the workhouse and Mr. Bumble, the parish beadle, enter and a thin gruel is served. Wolfing the meagre fare, the boys hopelessly stack their bowls, but the hapless Oliver approaches Bumble with the entreaty, "Please sir, I want some more." He is instantly subdued. Oliver is locked behind the barred door as the rest of the boys exit upstairs.Oliver is brought forward, bag and baggage, and is led off by Bumble who sings the haunting Boy for Sale. Walking through the streets of London, they arrive at Mr. Sowerberry's, the undertaker. Oliver is "sold" to the undertaker. Alone and frightened and surrounded by coffins on stage, he sings the plaintive Where Is Love?Oliver runs away the very next morning, and is picked up hungry and tired in the streets by the Artful Dodger who cheers him up with Consider Yourself. The Dodger leads him through crowded streets to Fagin's kitchen. The boys come in and Fagin himself appears and, with a mock solemn welcome to Oliver, sings the fantastic You've Got to Pick a Pocket or Two. Nancy, Bill Sikes' girl and Bet arrive. The two of them, accompanied by the boys and Fagin, celebrate their way of life in It's a Fine Life. The action moves to the next morning when Fagin sends the boys off on a pocket-picking expedition, Oliver among them. The stage now displays a city scene and we witness the capture of Oliver, not for picking pockets, but for simply looking guilty.In the second act the curtain rises on the "Three Cripples"-an underworld tavern-where Nancy is being encouraged to sing a music hall number, Oom-Pah-Pah. Fagin's boys pour down the stairs telling of Oliver's apprehension by the police, at the same time revealing that his innocence has been established and that he is presently ensconced in the home of a rich old gentleman. Fearful lest he give away their set-up, Fagin and Sikes dispatch Nancy to get Oliver back.Meanwhile, at the home of his new-found benefactor, the erstwhile ragged Oliver has become a well-tailored, well-cared for little lad. Looking out of his bedroom window he observes some passing street vendors crying their wares; he sings Who Will Buy? A plea that his good luck and new situation in life will be permanent. However, the moment he sets foot outside his benefactor's house, Oliver is seized and dragged off by Nancy to Fagin's.In the next scene Fagin occupies the empty stage and considers going straight in Reviewing the Situation. Subsequently, Bumble and Mrs. Corney, now uncomfortably married, discover that Oliver is the scion of a rich family. Their scheme to get him back fails and Nancy, regretting her part in the capture of Oliver, plans to return him to his benefactor at night on London Bridge. Fearful of Sikes, she reprises As Long as He Needs Me. Sikes stalks her and kills her. He grabs Oliver and, after a chase, is himself shot dead. Oliver is restored to his benefactor and Fagin, now without boys, home and money, reprises Reviewing the Situation.

For the 2010 season Black Rose Theatre Company of Brandon, MS is doing something different. Rather than our play selection committee locating the plays for consideration we are soliciting input from potential directors.

If there is a show you want to direct please send a proposal to our committee. If yours is chosen, you will be the director. We are seeking submissions in the following categories.

Musicals – large scale/cast and small scale/cast
Plays – comedy and drama
Children's show – musical or play
One acts plays in any category – at least one for younger actors
Christmas holiday play or musical – a possibility for 2010 season we are considering

Black Rose Theatre provides family friendly entertainment, therefore, excessive language and other extreme content conflicts with our mission. Every play does not have to be "squeaky clean" but it cannot overly cross the line of our community's taste. With the permission of the licensing company, however, we are sometimes able to make alterations to a script to make it fit our content needs.

Your proposal must include the following:
1. The title of the show
2. Publishing/licensing company information
3. The category/categories (of the above) under which the show falls
4. A synopsis of the story
5. Minimum cast size and if adaptable, how many possible actors can be used
6. A description of the set you want to use
7. A resume of your theatrical and directing experience
8. The reason you want to direct this show
9. The reason you believe the Black Rose community will enjoy this show
10. The reason you believe actors will want to be cast in this show
11. Language or situations that must be addressed before this play can be presented
12. Production, staffing, set, etc needs for which you will need assistance
13. Any marketing and publicity suggestions you have to attract actors and audiences to the show
14. Any information or additional comments you feel are pertinent

They have traced the location of a mysterious doll, which they are much interested in, to the Greenwich Village apartment of Sam Hendrix and his blind wife, Susy. Sam had apparently been persuaded by a strange woman to transport the doll across the Canadian border, not knowing that sewn inside were several grams of heroin. When the woman is murdered the situation becomes more urgent. The con man and his ex-convicts, through a cleverly constructed deception, convince Susy that the police have implicated Sam in the woman's murder, and the doll, which she believes is the key to his innocence, is evidence. She refuses to reveal its location, and with the help of a young neighbor, figures out she is the victim of a bizarre charade. But when Roat kills his associates, a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues between the two. Susy knows the only way to play fair is by her rules, so when darkness falls she turns off all the lights leaving both of them to maneuver in the dark until the game ends.

We listened to our patrons! Due to our wildly successful production Dearly Departed, and because so many of you said "Y'all need to do more like this" Black Rose Theatre Company Board of Directors is happy to announce we have taken your suggestion and changed our season a little. We will shift To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday to June 18-21 & 25-28 and will replace Who's on First with Dearly Beloved- much in the same style and written by one of the same authors as Dearly Departed. This production will be Feb 19-22 & Feb 26-Mar 1.

Because of these changes we are currently seeking directors for Dearly Beloved and To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday. If you are interested in directing one of these productions please email dlewis1952@comcast. net a letter of interest.

When the woman is murdered the situation becomes more urgent. The con man and his ex-convicts, through a cleverly constructed deception, convince Susy that the police have implicated Sam in the woman's murder, and the doll, which she believes is the key to his innocence, is evidence. She refuses to reveal its location, and with the help of a young neighbor, figures out she is the victim of a bizarre charade. But when Roat kills his associates, a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues between the two. Susy knows the only way to play fair is by her rules, so when darkness falls she turns off all the lights leaving both of them to maneuver in the dark until the game ends.

History of Black Rose Theatre

In the summer of 1991, Denver Wilson, then President of the Brandon, Mississippi Chamber of Commerce, got together with Brandon attorney, Bob Goddard, to discuss the need for a performing arts or theatre group in the Brandon/Rankin County area. They set a date and announced in the newspaper that there would be a meeting held and invited people interested in possibly forming a theatre group to attend. The turnout was overwhelming! The group adopted the name The Black Rose Theatre and began making plans for their first production. "The Night of January 16th" opened in the fall of 1991. The courtroom drama was presented, fittingly, at the Rankin County Courthouse, because the theatre group did not have a space of their own in which to perform.

We began to search and it led us to Black Street in downtown Brandon where we found a vacant building, in less than ideal condition. The building had once been a movie theatre, and a battery warehouse. The group liked the building, and was able to begin leasing it. Renovations had to be made before a play could be performed in the space. In the fall of 1992, The Black Rose Theatre presented it's first production in it's new, permanent home; the musical "The Fantastiks".

Since that time, the theatre has bought the building, and each year sets a season of five productions. The season runs from January through December. Each season includes a musical, a children's show, a couple of comedies, and a drama.

The theatre is a non-profit organization, and survives solely on season membership sales, at the door sales, donations, and sponsorship of shows by area businesses.
